“Can you drink coffee when TTC?” “How much coffee can you drink when pregnant?” “Wait! Does decaf has caffeine?!”
Present day, as I write this in August 2021, there is NO significant research proving that coffee specifically impacts fertility. Anything else is just fear mongering….
Finally, a clear answer! Coffee is OK when trying to conceive, right? Well, Not so fasT…
There has been recent research done on caffeine and estrogen-dominant conditions - like PCOS, Endometriosis, Fibroids and the like. So if you know you have one of these common conditions, it’s “better to be safe than sorry” when it comes to caffeine for now.
After all, it is a stimulant and can negatively disrupt your reproductive function + well-being - things like sleep and anxiety.

Before you write me off and think I’m misinformed it’s important to note why so many influential platforms are saying otherwise about caffeine.
The few pieces of research stating coffee is harmful to fertility show that the impact of caffeine by itself is unclear due to participant’s other lifestyle habits (smoking, poor diet, etc). This is why I like to remind you to be careful who you follow and take advice from. Most people with a platform aren’t fact checking the level of detail needed to speak to topics like this one. So if anyone is telling you your fertility is in jeopardy because of your lattes, they are wrong.
I will get on my imaginary soap box to yell, “Drink only organic coffee!” Anything else is allowing harmful toxins that leach into your body from pesticides - causing jitters, brain fog, and inflammation. Organic coffee is safer + way more delicious (anything else should be a freakin crime). In five years I promise coffee houses wont be able to not offer an organic option. We’re just not demanding it - yet.
If you take nothing else away from this post - Drink organic coffee. This will change your well-being and positively impact your brain and quality of life - just by avoiding pesticides on your beans.
Don’t forget - caffeine comes in other forms than just coffee - soda (please stop drinking this), chocolate, energy drinks, tea and several ice cream brands are the most popular caffeinated products. Even decaf has anywhere from 5-30% the amount of caffeine as a cup of regular coffee. It’s wise to flip your products over to check the label for the amount of caffeine even if you think it’s likely zero. You may be surprised.
Moral of the story: if you’re trying to conceive (TTC), do what feels good to you. Remember caffeine effects everyone differently. Coffee or not, but be sure to make safer choices with organic cleaner caffeine. That’s the change that will hold the greatest impact to your well-being.
